Love Hurts

Brothers,” the new home-from-the-war film, written by David Benioff and directed by Jim Sheridan, has been made with obvious devotion and sincerity, and I wish I could take it seriously. The movie is based on the 2004 Danish film “Brodre,” but it feels like a 1948 Arthur Miller play, without Miller’s toughness. Sam Shepard plays a dominating alcoholic father, a former marine who has long tormented his two sons, turning one, Sam (Tobey Maguire), into a high achiever, both athlete and war hero, dutifully serving multiple tours in Afghanistan; and the other, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), into a resentful, unemployable screwup.
