After the terrors of "Gomorrah," the moral landscape of "Two Lovers," the new James Gray film, seems altogether smaller and quieter, though scarred by desolations of its own. There are misdemeanors here, but no major crimes—not unless you count the mortal sin committed in the opening scene, which finds a man named Leonard (Joaquin Phoenix) jumping off a low bridge into a river. As suicide attempts go, it barely makes a splash; passersby haul him out, and, without pausing to thank them, he damply sets off home. [...]
