Pedro Castaneda was installing wireless computer networks in San Antonio when he met a young filmmaker named Chris Eska, who asked him to be in his first movie, “August Evening” (Sept. 5). Mr. Castaneda hesitated, but after reading the script and consulting his family, he said yes. Considering that Mr. Eska was offering the leading role to a novice in his 50s, it’s hard to say who was taking the greater chance. But no matter — their gamble has paid off handsomely.
“August Evening” is a deceptively quiet, Ozu-like drama set in southwest Texas, near the Mexican border. [...]
