There’s Something About Mary Magdalene

For certain tormented souls religious faith is synonymous with agonizing guilt. At least that is how the filmmaker and artistic wild man Abel Ferrara portrays Christianity in “Mary,” a convoluted, hysterical mess of a movie with grandiose spiritual airs and not a drop of humor.
“Mary,” which opens Friday in New York without a distributor three years after it was shown in the Venice Film Festival, is a weepy slab of overheated Gothic kitsch that shamelessly piggybacks on Mel Gibson's “Passion of the Christ” and the controversy it engendered. [...]
