The stunning new Blu-ray edition of "The Prisoner" from A&E is another tribute to the staying power of the enigmatic television series created by Patrick McGoohan and George Markstein, first broadcast in Britain in 1967 and in the United States a year later. Photographed in 35 millimeter and clearly very well preserved, the 17 50-minute episodes look every bit as good in high-definition as full-fledged feature films, with extraordinary detail and color values.
The celebrated credit sequence sets up the premise: a British agent (possibly John Drake, the character played by McGoohan in his previous series, "Danger Man" ) resigns from his job only to wake up in the Village, a quaintly Italianate seaside resort. [...]
