Ben è un fallito cantante di canzoni di bambini e un ancor meno straordinario papà nei fine settimana. Profondamente cinico, il solo piacere di Ben nella vita è giocare a scacchi con il suo compagno di stanza senegalese Ibou. Quando all'improvviso Ibou si ammala e un indifferente uomo del comune peggiora la situazione d'emergenza, la visione pessimistica del mondo di Ben viene inequivocabilmente confermata. Ma quando la sorella di Ibou Khadi prende il suo posto nel suo appartamento, quello che inizia come una strana convivenza diventa qualcosa di più e Ben scopre che il cinismo potrebbe essere solo un problema di prospettiva.
